Day 1

I am very tired but its to early to go to bed so I though I would update everyone on my day. I just finished my first day in Saipan. For those who read yesterday you know the Airline lost one of my bags. Thank the Good Lord it came in today and I was able to pick it up. So glad i got all my stuff especially my camera equipment. I should be getting some pictures up in the next few days.

In order to get my work status completed I had to get a health certificate, They took an x-ray of my lungs and asked me many times if I smoked even though the x-ray was fine which I though was weird. I also had to get a police clearance, lucky for me they did not uncover my criminal past. I still have not gotten my license. The DMV here seemed to think that Liberation Day (what they call the 4th)  is a two day Holiday extending into the 5th.

I think the best part of my day was signing up for cell phone service. The deals here are great! Much better prices than the good old USA. I even get unlimited calling to the US but only if I make the call. I should be able to get full coverage all over the island.

IMG_20170705_153758The craziest part of the day was when I was in the Saipan version of Costco, (Yes they have a lot of the same stuff, just higher prices) I saw a hard drive (left) for 150 dollars. This wouldn't have been too strange except this was not a solid state drive and it was only 500 gigs. I looked on amazon and when I finally found a 500 gig Hard drive it was 39 dollars, I think I found a way to make some extra cash.....

The apartment is still nice, its got AC so I cant complain. The WiFi signal is weak but its enough to check email and post things on my site so all in all not bad. I found out where I will be staying next after this place gets fixed. I got less than a month so I better get started. So far Saipan is  decent place to live.
The picture is of a place called "The Grotto" More on that later...

Cooking in Saipan

Everyone thinks that their mom is the best cook. But they are all wrong. Its true. My mom is literally the best cook. Except for maybe when she cooks quinoa, I can live without that. But seriously she really knows her way around the kitchen. Especially Mexican Food. She must have some Mexican ancestors. Those of you who have known me for longer than 5 minutes know that I love Taco Bell, and if you have been reading my blog you know that my first month here I ate at Taco Bell for virtually every meal. But all that changed when I realized I couldn't afford 15 dollars a day for food at Taco Bell so after I got settled I started cooking for myself. And its largely thanks to my mom that I am able to do that. Now I have always been able to cook. As far back as I can remember I have been able to pop a frozen burrito in the microwave and have it come out near perfect. Its a skill that is hard to find these days. As time went on I needed to learn to cook more complicated dishes. Like pastas...

1000 Days

I noticed today that it has been over a year since my last blog post, so I figured it was time to post an update. A lot has happened in the last year! First of all, I moved from Saipan and accepted a job working for the Micronesia Mission office in Guam. Second and even more exciting, I have a girlfriend! We met in Tennessee this last summer and I am so thankful that she is a part of my life. There will be future posts with stories and lessons I have learned in the last year, but for this post I want to focus on my last 1000 days as a missionary. It is hard to believe that it has been just over 1000 days since I first landed in Saipan almost 3 years ago. When I hit that milestone on Monday, I thought back to my first day on the island. The people were friendly and the trees and water were beautiful. There were brightly colored flowers everywhere! The sun was shining brightly and the air was fresh, and the only thing on my mind was….. How can I get home? Oh how I wanted to leave!...
