Things You Learn Living in Saipan

Hey, thought I would  do another, "Things I've learned in Saipan" post. If you want to check out the first one I wrote click here.  I'd like to do another 20 questions post sometime so if anyone has any questions they would like answered please let me know.

  1. There are spiders everywhere you go so bring a stick with you when hiking to clear the path.

  2. If IT&E thinks they might loose your business they will do whatever it takes to keep you. Especially when you have 4+ connections with them.

  3. In this climate, Gatorade is better than water. tenor

  4. When Pizza Hut says 20 minutes they mean 40. Plan ahead. And double check they gave you onions.

  5. I can see movies in theaters 24 hours before the United States so those of you who don't want the new Thor spoiled can donate money to me via my PayPal. Not a threat, just a suggestion.

  6. It's impossible to get deals on gas here since all the stations seem to be participating in price fixing,

  7. There are a lot of services that I can't get here, like Direct TV NOW, or certain features of Google Play Music, but you can get around this with a VPN and GPS spoofer.[gallery ids="1190,1191" type="rectangular"]

  8. Stocks are traded while I'm asleep so its easy to make a mistake.

  9. Make friends with your neighbors, cause when you are sick, they might bring you some delicious soup!

  10. If you hang around the school long enough the kids will come offer you some of the cookies they made in after school classes. Staying late does have its benefits.

  11. October is apparently not to early to set up Christmas decorations. Yes Ace Hardware I'm talking about you.

  12. Sunsets are beautiful here.IMG_20171005_180436.jpg

  13. Two day Prime shipping does not exist here yet (drones can't come soon enough) so if your Raspberry Pi dies, so does your media server, and you have to watch Netflix like a caveman until Amazon ships your package.

  14. Mango 6 is a great place to study, or just hang out. Free WiFi!

  15. People here really don't know how to drive. Seriously, if you go anywhere on the island prepare to be stuck behind someone who thinks 10 to 15 mph under the speed limit.

Cooking in Saipan

Everyone thinks that their mom is the best cook. But they are all wrong. Its true. My mom is literally the best cook. Except for maybe when she cooks quinoa, I can live without that. But seriously she really knows her way around the kitchen. Especially Mexican Food. She must have some Mexican ancestors. Those of you who have known me for longer than 5 minutes know that I love Taco Bell, and if you have been reading my blog you know that my first month here I ate at Taco Bell for virtually every meal. But all that changed when I realized I couldn't afford 15 dollars a day for food at Taco Bell so after I got settled I started cooking for myself. And its largely thanks to my mom that I am able to do that. Now I have always been able to cook. As far back as I can remember I have been able to pop a frozen burrito in the microwave and have it come out near perfect. Its a skill that is hard to find these days. As time went on I needed to learn to cook more complicated dishes. Like pastas...

1000 Days

I noticed today that it has been over a year since my last blog post, so I figured it was time to post an update. A lot has happened in the last year! First of all, I moved from Saipan and accepted a job working for the Micronesia Mission office in Guam. Second and even more exciting, I have a girlfriend! We met in Tennessee this last summer and I am so thankful that she is a part of my life. There will be future posts with stories and lessons I have learned in the last year, but for this post I want to focus on my last 1000 days as a missionary. It is hard to believe that it has been just over 1000 days since I first landed in Saipan almost 3 years ago. When I hit that milestone on Monday, I thought back to my first day on the island. The people were friendly and the trees and water were beautiful. There were brightly colored flowers everywhere! The sun was shining brightly and the air was fresh, and the only thing on my mind was….. How can I get home? Oh how I wanted to leave!...
