Yutu Part 3 Getting Back to Normal

I am sitting here in the office/ my current house, looking at all the great black Friday deals that I will not be getting this year, Home Depot, Best Buy, So many missed opportunities, So much money saved… Its depressing… I was looking through Amazons deals a few good ones but mostly junk. Then my eye caught a picture of a cat on one of the items, now I know Amazon does not sell animals… yest… (Coming summer 2020) so I looked closer and noticed that it was an automatic cat laser, you know how you taker the laser pointer and make the cat chase the little red dot. It got me to thinking about how automated we have become, I mean seriously! Can we not even torture our pets anymore? I mean play with them? We have to have. A robot do it for us? I mean as a Tech guy I always love seeing new technology and playing with the latest and greatest computers or new software, but I mean come on. I feel at some point we crossed a line and that line was way before robot cat torturing devices.

Anyway Typhoon Yutu recovery is going great. We had a short “break” for thanksgiving, it was nice but I ended up working most all of the days to run generators for everyone.

Thursday Thanksgiving Day, I forgot to turn off my alarm so even though I didn’t need to I was still up at 5:30 AM, and let me ask you, why is it that every day of the work week I need to be up at 5:30 if I want an extra few minutes I can fall asleep in seconds, but on days off when I have nothing to do and nowhere to be I wake up too early and I am wide awake no matter how hard I try I cannot fall back asleep. We had a Thanksgiving dinner with all the staff, church members and clinic staff. It was a nice time. Nothing as good as my Moms cooking but there was some good stuff to choose from there.

For dinner I decided I wanted to forget I was on Saipan for a while, so I went to a Texas themed Country Steakhouse. I realized I wouldn’t get the back in the states feeling when I saw all the Employees all Asian, dressed in full cowboy outfits, all wearing a signature cowboy hats. I’m just glad they didn’t try the Texas accent. Service was good, food was good and I even got a 25% off of my meal.

On my way back to my truck a lady tried to stop me asking if I wanted a massage. I said no and kept going, I knew where this was heading so I reached into my pocket to grab my phone and record the conversation but before I could get to it she runs up to me and grabs my arm and starts rubbing my back. She asked me a few more times if I wanted a massage and I kept saying no, so then she stated saying special massage? “Very beautiful woman! Happy Ending!” I kept saying no and a few times she would grab my and try dragging me to the massage place. She finally left me alone when I said “my girlfriend won’t like it” I need to start taking people with me when I go to Garapan, just about every time I am alone there, I get solicited by one of them. This one was extra aggressive though, they don’t usually touch me.

Friday I needed to do laundry but it was raining so washing in my bucket and drying with the sun wasn’t an option so I ventured into the town looking for a dry spot dry my clothes once they are washed. I happened upon a store with the word Laundry on the front, so I went inside. They had these machines, in one machine you put your clothes in and it would wash them for you!! All the stomping in a bucket was done by a machine! I couldn’t believe it. Then when they were done being washed there was a second machine that dried the clothes! All dry without the sun! I don’t know if these amazing machines have made it to the states yet, but they are amazing.

After my laundry I went back to my old house to check up on things the area I live is still very messed up. This trash pile has been there since the storm and they are doing nothing to help clean up the area, by they I of course mean the government, most other areas are being cleaned but the south side, the part that was hurt the most isn’t.

While at my house I decided to take a shower in an actual shower for the first time in nearly a month, it was really nice, and I didn’t want to leave. I wanted to stay and go back to living there. But that isn’t really an option right now. There are those that have told me I am at the school by my choice, but that isn’t the full story, I am there for security, we have people driving by a lot in the evenings after school is out. One afternoon a truck was driving through our parking lot. I was filling the generators and stopped to go talk to him. When we saw me, he started to move a bit, so I took off sprinting toward him. Fast as I could, and he floored it and sped out of there, I pulled out my phone and pretended to film him, once on the street out of our property he slammed on the breaks seeing my phone. And started yelling at me and flipping me off. So being a reasonable adult I started walking to the street to go talk to him. At that moment one of the teachers who had been watching the whole thing yelled at me, “Jonathan! Do not go talk to that man” I didn’t see the problem, I ain’t no dummy I had my knife ready if I needed it. He yelled a few more times and then sped off. But he was definitely checking the place out.

If my truck wasn’t in front of the door during the night we would have break ins. Many places on the island have already been broken into. Looted. As soon as power is restored here, and we have our cameras back I can leave, but until then my being here is keeping people from vandalizing the school, or worst. And as far as places to live go I could be doing worse.

There are some puppies on island they are very cute. Very playful, I was playing with them here, the mother was a little concerned when I first came up but after a bit she calmed down, and realized I wasn’t going to hurt them and she left.

Friday Night I went on a little drive. One of the beaches lost so much land that you have about a 3 to 4-foot drop to get from the stairs to the beach. Here are some pictures from that. I got a new phone and was testing out the night picture mode which is supposed to be really good. I may do another post on my new phone, but I doubt most of the people who read this would care very much so I will just say, big screen, great battery life, fast charging, very fast, and very good price. Here are the pictures.

Cooking in Saipan

Everyone thinks that their mom is the best cook. But they are all wrong. Its true. My mom is literally the best cook. Except for maybe when she cooks quinoa, I can live without that. But seriously she really knows her way around the kitchen. Especially Mexican Food. She must have some Mexican ancestors. Those of you who have known me for longer than 5 minutes know that I love Taco Bell, and if you have been reading my blog you know that my first month here I ate at Taco Bell for virtually every meal. But all that changed when I realized I couldn't afford 15 dollars a day for food at Taco Bell so after I got settled I started cooking for myself. And its largely thanks to my mom that I am able to do that. Now I have always been able to cook. As far back as I can remember I have been able to pop a frozen burrito in the microwave and have it come out near perfect. Its a skill that is hard to find these days. As time went on I needed to learn to cook more complicated dishes. Like pastas...

1000 Days

I noticed today that it has been over a year since my last blog post, so I figured it was time to post an update. A lot has happened in the last year! First of all, I moved from Saipan and accepted a job working for the Micronesia Mission office in Guam. Second and even more exciting, I have a girlfriend! We met in Tennessee this last summer and I am so thankful that she is a part of my life. There will be future posts with stories and lessons I have learned in the last year, but for this post I want to focus on my last 1000 days as a missionary. It is hard to believe that it has been just over 1000 days since I first landed in Saipan almost 3 years ago. When I hit that milestone on Monday, I thought back to my first day on the island. The people were friendly and the trees and water were beautiful. There were brightly colored flowers everywhere! The sun was shining brightly and the air was fresh, and the only thing on my mind was….. How can I get home? Oh how I wanted to leave!...
