Questions and Answers

Today I received a letter letter (yes the paper kind, what year is this 1994) from my sister, Ashley Alipoon (almost wrote Riddle, Sorry Dom) anyway in this letter she said that she had 1000 questions for me that she wanted me to post on my blog, well I counted and it was much closer to 11. But nonetheless I thought it sounded like a fun idea, so here we go...

1. What do you need the most?

I need prayer the most. I can get most of the things I need here on the island, except Fritos. I miss Fritos.

2. What is the island like?

Well there is water everywhere. It's very hot and humid, My clothes are soaked in sweat in the first 45 minutes of work. Other than that very pretty, and very friendly. Probably more friendly than Texas.

3. What are you most excited about experiencing?

Scuba diving is something that sounds fun to me.

4. What are the people like?

Very friendly, and helpful. Every hardware store I go to, the employees try to help load up your car.

5. What was your Taco Bell Experience like?

Well its Taco Bell so it was certainly pleasant. Sadly they are always out of Mt Dew... Its costs more than in the states but that just makes it taste all the better.

6. Have you met any neighbors?

I have met neighbors/ other employees/  student missionaries. Everyone is very nice.

7. What is the prettiest thing you've seen?

The Taco Bell menu. Or the bamboo forest. No its the Taco Bell menu.

8. Whats the craziest thing that has happened?

I don't know... Agreeing to come to this heat box for two years. Just kidding, I'm sure I will get used to it in time.

9. Do you have a washer and dryer?

Yes. And no. There is a washer and dryer where I am staying, but I am converting the laundry room to a shower so they will be leaving. But I will be moving soon anyway so it wouldn't matter. Fun Fact, dish soap can be used as laundry detergent when you don't want to make the 2 minute trip into town.

10. Are you going to come back a minimalist?

Interesting question, I guess  that depends on the definition of minimalist. I've never considered myself a pack rat but I do collect an awful lot of tech gear. I don't expect that to change. But i think I will be living more simply (outside of the tech world of course.

11. Do you have enough time in the day to get everything done you need to get done?

Not even close. I have about 2 weeks to get this place done, I have been working all day and try to get some done at night too. It will take a miracle to get done what I need to get done. Please pray for me, this Job needs to get done.

That was the last question. I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I did writing. I thought this was a fun idea and would like to do this again. If you have any questions for me that you would like answered you can send them to me on Facebook or email me at jonriddle33@gmail.com. Or comment below. I suppose you could send me a letter like my 70 year old sister (just kidding its always nice to get snail mail) but it would take a while to get here. Once I get enough questions I will post another Q&A.

Cooking in Saipan

Everyone thinks that their mom is the best cook. But they are all wrong. Its true. My mom is literally the best cook. Except for maybe when she cooks quinoa, I can live without that. But seriously she really knows her way around the kitchen. Especially Mexican Food. She must have some Mexican ancestors. Those of you who have known me for longer than 5 minutes know that I love Taco Bell, and if you have been reading my blog you know that my first month here I ate at Taco Bell for virtually every meal. But all that changed when I realized I couldn't afford 15 dollars a day for food at Taco Bell so after I got settled I started cooking for myself. And its largely thanks to my mom that I am able to do that. Now I have always been able to cook. As far back as I can remember I have been able to pop a frozen burrito in the microwave and have it come out near perfect. Its a skill that is hard to find these days. As time went on I needed to learn to cook more complicated dishes. Like pastas...

1000 Days

I noticed today that it has been over a year since my last blog post, so I figured it was time to post an update. A lot has happened in the last year! First of all, I moved from Saipan and accepted a job working for the Micronesia Mission office in Guam. Second and even more exciting, I have a girlfriend! We met in Tennessee this last summer and I am so thankful that she is a part of my life. There will be future posts with stories and lessons I have learned in the last year, but for this post I want to focus on my last 1000 days as a missionary. It is hard to believe that it has been just over 1000 days since I first landed in Saipan almost 3 years ago. When I hit that milestone on Monday, I thought back to my first day on the island. The people were friendly and the trees and water were beautiful. There were brightly colored flowers everywhere! The sun was shining brightly and the air was fresh, and the only thing on my mind was….. How can I get home? Oh how I wanted to leave!...
