Wow has it been a while since i posted one of these. When I first got here I expected that I would post once or twice a week. I think the last thing I posted was about a month ago. I don't if I can remember everything that happened, but here are the highlights.
I got the maintenance shed (shipping container) all cleaned out and fixed up. Before there was no walking room. I put in a wall, to divide the maintenance from the ground added electricity and lights so you could actually see what you were doing, and yes the all important air conditioner. Still running out of space to put things though.
I had a birthday on the island, I tried to keep it quiet but my mom spilled the beans in a very nice Facebook post. All in all it was good though, went to work then came home and made myself some Mexican food, which was pretty good.
Last week on Wednesday morning I woke up long enough to see my power go out. This worried me because last time my power was out it took them two weeks to turn it on again. So I laid there for about an hour listening to the wind howling and the building shaking, thinking about what I was going to do with the power out. (for cooking reasons... mostly...) After an hour or so the power came back on and I was able to relax and go to sleep. I then woke up to a call from the principal. My first thought was, shoot! I'm late for work! When he told me that there was no school because the power at the school had been taken out by the storm, I thought he was messing with me. But as it turned out he was not and we got a free day off work. I arrived at the school to let the SMs know and after that we went out to IHOP for some breakfast. It wasn't bad, but I'm not going to give a cold waffle a 5 star review either. Most of the rest of the day was spent relaxing and watching movies, and at the end of the day I had some people over for some quesadillas and movies. To be honest I got really bored not working that day, but I am hoping and praying that the storm heading our way now gives us another day off.
This weekend was Kids Camp for the youth group here on Saipan, I recently started helping out with their program and on Sabbath we went around and invited people to the Kids Camp program that happened today, Sunday. I took a group of young guys around in my truck passing out fliers and didn't realize until after I talked to someone else how strange it must have looked to the people I talked to with, for me, an adult male with a truck full of young boys, asking parents, "Hey do you have kids?" It must have seemed strange to them.
After Kids Camp a few of the SMS, Sabrina, Dorea, Scott, and Nathan and myself decided to take a little adventure. We found this over grown road near a gravel plant a few weeks ago and turned back because of how over grown it was. Today we decided to go back and go all the way. We got a good mile or so in and had to stop because of a fallen papaya tree. We figured that it couldn't be much farther and thought that we could hike for a few minutes to see the end. Boy were we wrong. We continued to hike through the jungle on the very over grown path, ducking under trees, jumping at the rats running though the trees and clearing spiders out of our path, we hiked and hiked thinking that we must be getting close now. Finally someone told me to check my phone map and see where we were, Incredibly Google Maps had the path were were on marked. And I could see we were getting close to the end. We got there after a about and hour of hiking our first reaction was, "Are you serious?! we hiked through the jungle for this!!?" But then our eyes caught gimps of an old structure, We ran over too it and climbed up to top of it, looked in and found a rusted WWII cannon! At that point we all agreed it was worth the hike. We explored around a bit there and found some old bullets, some pieces of shells, old rock walls that soldiers would have hidden behind. I found a few pieces of copper metal. I'm sure if you went back with a metal detector you could find a lot of awesome things. After we had enough exploring we heading back this time the hike was better because we knew where we were going. After getting back to the truck I checked my phone and discovered that we had hiked roughly 4 miles, 2 each way. Which to some of you may not seem like much, but try doing to in flip flips in the rain in the middle of the jungle, Its a bit harder than it sounds. All in all it was a great adventure. I will defiantly go back with more preparation. I need to find a WWII bayonet or a grenade before I leave.
